What is Ancestral Health?
Ancestral health is about honoring the way human beings evolved and living in harmony with our genetic blueprint. It’s about eating, living, and moving in ways that are aligned to how our primal hunter-gatherer ancestors lived.
Yes, we live in a much different, more modern world than our ancient ancestors. But at the end of the day, our genetic blueprint is practically identical to them. This means that our optimal state of health and vitality is found by living in alignment with our natural state of, what I call, “human-beingness”.
I believe our natural state as humans is to be healthy, vibrant, creative, and compassionate. Nature’s default state is one where all beings thrive and are interwoven in a system of interconnected health and vitality. Yet, several thousand years ago, humans began disconnecting themselves from key, life-giving parts of this interconnected system. As a result, we find ourselves in a world where the effects of these disconnections are all finally emerging with tremendous repercussions.
We now live in a society where 88% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy, which has resulted in a plague of chronic health problems that were not known to our ancient ancestors. Mental health struggles and chronic stress are commonplace for most folks. And then, on top of our human health and social problems, we are witnessing ecological breakdowns that have fueled a climate disaster.
Yet, despite these challenges, I believe we are being called as humans to heal our beautiful planet, and to restore health and vitality at every level. To do this, I believe it is critical we reconnect to four key things that were instinctive to our ancient, primal ancestors (and those instincts are still there deep within us!). These are what I call the Four Ancestral Connections, and they include the body, earth, community, and ancestral lineage.
